Description

The PerDes qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Peronospora destructor detection by using qPCR. Peronospora destructor is an obligate biotrophic oomycete pathogen with a filamentous morphology, classified within the family Peronosporaceae. It is the causal agent of downy mildew in Allium species, including onions, shallots, chives, garlic and leeks. Infected plants exhibit symptoms such as pale lesions on the leaves, and grey spots on the leaf surfaces, leading to tissue collapse and significant yield loss. Peronospora destructor is mainly spread through wind-dispersed spores and can persist in plant debris or infected bulbs, contributing to its wide global distribution, particularly in cool and humid climates. Effective disease management typically involves crop rotation, fungicide application, and the use of resistant cultivars. The design was based on the publication of Van der Heyden et al. 2020. The assay can produce positive results in the presence of high concentrations of either the Peronospora capsici or Peronospora corydalis species, which cause downy mildew in Capsicum and Corydalis species.
