Small Ruminant Lentivirus
Description
The Small Ruminant Lentivirus dtec-RT-qPCR-Panel-2 comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Maedi-Visna virus and Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus detection by using qPCR. Maedi-Visna virus is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus from the genus Lentivirus and subfamily Orthoretrovirinae. Maedi-Visna is a chronic viral disease prevalent in adult sheep, but rarely can be found in certain species of goat. It causes encephalitis and chronic pneumonitis by infecting the white blood cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage. It is known as Visna when found in the brain, and Maedi when infecting the lungs. The natural transmission of Maedi-Visna virus is mostly by the respiratory route, but also to newborn lambs by colostrum and milk. Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA lentivirus belonging to the family Retroviridae. The virus adversely affects the immune system of its host, causing a disease known as caprine arthritis encephalitis, which is widely disseminated in goat herds on different continents. Common symptoms include arthritis, pneumonia, indurative mastitis, and encephalitis. However, many goats will not show any symptoms. By far, the most important source of infection, is the milk of positive animals. In fact, if the kids are fed with communal milk from the herd, all the kids can be infected by just a single positive goat.
