UK-variant B.1.1.7 SARS-CoV-2

Description

The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 dtec-RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for UK-variant B.1.1.7 SARS-CoV-2detection by using qPCR. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped virus with a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome belonging to the Coronaviridae family, Betacoronavirus genus and Sarbecovirus subgenus. Last December 2020, a new SARS-CoV-2 variant was identified across the South East of England. It has been identified with several names, like B.1.1.7 SARS-CoV-2, VUI-202012/01 (Variant Under Investigation) and VOC-202012/01 (Variant of Concern). According to scientists from the “COVID-19 Genomics Consortium UK” (CoG-UK), this new phylogenetic cluster has expanded rapidly in several British locations in the last 4 weeks and has jumped to other countries in Europe. Its genome presents an unusually high number of genetic changes (mutations), affecting the spike protein, which seem to increase its propagation capacity compared to the other SARS-CoV-2 strains. Some mutations had been previously characterized, but not all of them simultaneously as in this case. The rapid growth of this lineage indicates the need to improve its epidemiological and specific genomic surveillance throughout the world. It is recommended to run this assay simultaneously with CoVID-19 dtec-RT-qPCR assay, which detects all strains of SARS-CoV-2.
