The FraTul qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Francisella tularensis detection by using qPCR. Francisella tularensis is a non-motile, non-spore forming, Gram-negative, highly contagious bacteria that causes tularemia (or “rabbit fever”) that is contagious to humans. F. tularensis is a highly contagious zoonotic bacteria that can be spread through vectors, such as mosquitos and fleas, or from being breathed in from the air. It can infect humans through skin, mucous membranes, lungs, and the gastrointestinal tract. There are four known subspecies of F. tularensis with different degrees of virulence and geographical distribution. Due to its low infectious dose, ease of spread by aerosol, and high virulence, F. tularensis is classified as a potential agent of bioterrorism.
