China Reports Rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases, Prompting Enhanced Diagnostic Solutions

January 14, 2025

China has reported an increase in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, a common seasonal virus similar to influenza or RSV. It mainly affects children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, causing mild symptoms such as cough and fever in healthy people. HMPV spreads through direct contact or contaminated surfaces, with peaks in winter and spring.

Experts stress that it is not a major health threat and that cases in Spain fall within normal seasonal patterns. While there is no vaccine, prevention focuses on hygiene measures such as hand washing and avoiding contact with vulnerable groups when symptoms are present. Surveillance systems remain in place to track the virus.

genetic PCR solutions™ has used its rapid response capabilities to develop a qPCR kit for HMPV, which is currently awaiting validation and market release. The company has already demonstrated this capability by launching the first qPCR kit for COVID-19 in January 2020.
