Acanthamoeba spp.
Description
The AcaSpp dtec-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Acanthamoeba spp. detection by using qPCR. Acanthamoeba is a genus of amoebae and one of the most prevalent protozoa found in the environment. Their distribution is worldwide and have been isolated from soil, air, and water environments, as well as human skin, nasal cavities, throats, intestines, and contact lens, even plants and other mammals. Acanthamoeba species are free-living bacterivores, but in certain situations, they can cause infections in humans and other animals. It is responsible of a variety of infections, including Acanthamoeba keratitis, an eye infection associated with use of contact lenses and cornea damage, and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, a serious central nervous system infection that primarily affects immunocompromised individuals.
