Escherichia coli O157:H7

Description

The ECO157 dtec-qPCR comprises a series of species-specific targeted reagents designed for detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 by using qPCR. Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and a cause of illness through food. Infection may lead to hemorrhagic diarrhea, and tokidneyfailure. Transmission is via the fecal-oral route, and most illness has been through undercooked, contaminatedground beef or ground porkbeing eaten. The “O” in the name refers to the cell wall (somatic) antigen number, whereas the “H” refers to the flagella antigen. Other serotypes may cause (usually less severe) illness. E. coli O157:H7 was first recognized as a pathogen as a result of an outbreak of unusual gastrointestinal illness in 1982.E. coli O157:H7 is markedly different from other pathogenic E. coli, as well. In particular, the O157:H7 serotype is negative for invasiveness (Sereny test), adheres through the E. coli common pilus, and does not produce heat stable or heat labile toxins.
