Feline coronavirus (FIPV included)

Description

The FCoV RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Feline coronavirus (FIPV included) detection by using qPCR. Feline coronavirus is an enveloped, single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus within the family Coronaviridae and the genus Alphacoronavirus. It infects domestic and wild cats, with most infections being asymptomatic or causing mild enteric symptoms such as diarrhoea. However, in some cases, the virus mutates within the host, leading to the development of feline infectious peritonitis, a severe and often fatal systemic disease. Clinical manifestations of feline infectious peritonitis include fever, weight loss, abdominal distension, and neurological signs. Feline coronavirus is mainly transmitted through the faecal-oral route and is highly prevalent in multi-cat environments such as shelters and catteries. The virus is globally distributed, and control relies on good hygiene practices and minimising crowding among cats. The assay detects the two forms of FCoV: Feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), associated with enteric infections, and Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), associated with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Since the effusive form of FIP is characterised by fluid accumulation in body cavities, the detection of high FCoV loads in such fluids (e.g., effusion or ascitic samples) is indicative of FIP.
