The HepCan qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Hepatozoon canis detection by using qPCR. Hepatozoon canis is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan protozoan parasite of the family Hepatozoidae. It is the causative agent of canine hepatozoonosis, primarily affecting domestic dogs and wild canids. Infection may be subclinical or associated with clinical signs such as fever, lethargy, weight loss, anaemia, lymphadenopathy, and musculoskeletal pain. Disease severity is influenced by parasite burden and the host’s immune status. Transmission occurs mainly through the ingestion of infected ticks, particularly Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, rather than by tick bite, and vertical transmission has also been reported. Hepatozoon canis has a broad global distribution, especially in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions where competent tick vectors are present.
