Lassa virus, Marburg virus and Oropouche virus
Description
The FebDV RT-qPCR Triplex comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Lassa virus, Marburg virus and Oropouche virus detection by using multiplexed qPCR. Lassa virus, Marburg virus, and Oropouche virus are enveloped RNA viruses belonging respectively to the families Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, and Peribunyaviridae. These viruses cause human diseases including Lassa fever, Marburg virus disease and Oropouche fever. The clinical manifestations range from mild febrile illness to severe haemorrhagic fever. Lassa and Marburg viruses often cause systemic involvement, vascular leakage and multi-organ failure, whereas Oropouche virus typically induces an acute febrile syndrome accompanied by headache and myalgia, and sometimes neurological complications. Lassa virus is transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta, Marburg virus through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or animals, and Oropouche virus via arthropod vectors. These viruses show endemic distributions in West Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and tropical regions of Central and South America, respectively. The OROV RT-qPCR assay is based on the one recommended by the Pan American Health Organization, but with some modifications to improve thermodynamics, and it recognises the whole Orthobunyavirus oropoucheense species and some sequences from Jatobal virus.
