Louping ill virus
Description
The LIV RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Louping ill virus detection by using qPCR. Louping ill virus is an enveloped virus with a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome, that belongs to the family Flaviviridae, genus Orthoflavivirus. It primarily infects sheep and other livestock, as well as wild animals such as red grouse, and can occasionally infect humans. The virus causes louping ill, a neurological disease characterised by fever, ataxia, tremors and, in severe cases, paralysis or death, particularly in sheep. In humans, infection is rare, but can result in an illness similar to influenza or, in some cases, encephalitis. Transmission mainly occurs through the bite of infected ticks, particularly the species Ixodes ricinus. The virus is predominantly found in the British Isles and other parts of Northern Europe, where it is associated with tick-infested grazing areas. Louping ill virus exhibits high genetic variability and presents taxonomic difficulties.
