The Mayaro virus is an enveloped virus with a linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome. Infection with the Mayaro virus causes Mayaro virus disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. This disease is characterized by fever, headache, myalgia, rash, severe pain in the large joints, and its association with rheumatic symptoms.
