Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus upE gene
Description
The MERS-CoV-upE RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus upE gene detection by using qPCR. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (species Betacoronavirus cameli) is an enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus belonging to the family Coronaviridae. It primarily infects humans and dromedary camels, which are considered the main animal reservoir. It causes Middle East respiratory syndrome, a severe respiratory illness characterised by fever, cough, and shortness of breath, often progressing to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, with a high case fatality rate. Transmission occurs through close contact with infected individuals or animals, particularly camels, and via respiratory droplets, with evidence of nosocomial outbreaks. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus has been reported mainly in the Middle East but has also caused travel-associated cases globally. The assay targets the upE gene, one of the target regions recommended by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
