Mycobacterium avium is a species of mycobacteria which belong to the Mycobacteriaceae family. This species is part of a group of species included on the Mycobacterium avium complex, which usually infects immunocompromised patients or subjects suffering from a severe lung disease. Mycobacterium avium also produces tuberculosis in birds, and even amoebas can be infected. It is commonly found in water, household dust and soil, and infection can happen during breathing or through contaminated water or food ingestion.
