Otodectes spp.
Description
The OtoSpp qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Otodectes spp. detection by using qPCR. Otodectes species are parasitic mites of the family Psoroptidae, characterised by an oval, flattened body and long legs. To date, only one species of Otodectes has been identified, O. cynotis. It primarily infests the ear canals of wild and domestic carnivores such as dogs and cats, and may occasionally infect humans. Infestation results in otodectic mange, commonly known as ear mite infestation, which causes rubbing and scratching of the ears, violent head shaking, depression, excessive drainage and haematoma of the ear. Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with infested animals, and the mites are distributed worldwide.
