Poliovirus
Description
The PV RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Poliovirus detection by using qPCR. Poliovirus is a serotype of the Enterovirus C species, a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Enterovirus genus belonging to the Picornaviridae family. It is the causative agent of poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, a disease that primarily affects humans, especially children under the age of five, and in severe cases can lead to paralysis. The virus initially infects the gastrointestinal tract but can spread to the central nervous system, causing inflammation and damage to motor neurons. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and limb pain, and in rare cases, irreversible paralysis, which can be fatal. Poliovirus is highly contagious and is transmitted mainly through the faecal-oral route and through contaminated water or food. Its global distribution has been significantly reduced through widespread vaccination efforts, and eradication initiatives are underway in endemic regions such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. The assay detects all three Poliovirus serotypes and most Coxsackievirus serotypes within the Enterovirus C species.
