Psoroptes spp.

Description

The PsoSpp qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Psoroptes spp. detection by using qPCR. Psoroptes species are non-burrowing parasitic mites of the family Psoroptidae, characterised by oval bodies, long segmented legs and characteristic long, jointed pedicels with suckers at the tips. To date, only one species of Psoroptes has been identified, P. ovis. These mites cause psoroptic mange, a highly contagious skin disease. It mainly affects domestic animals, particularly cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits, and does not cause significant disease in wildlife. It is also known as sheep scab and cattle scab, but is a much more serious problem in sheep than in cattle. Symptoms include severe skin lesions with scab formation on the back, shoulders and tail head, severe itching and weight loss. Transmission occurs mainly by direct animal to animal or sometimes by fomites such as fences, scratching posts and grooming equipment. Psoroptes ovis is found worldwide but has been eradicated from domestic sheep in several countries.
