Shamonda virus

Description

The SHAV RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Shamonda virus detection by using qPCR. Shamonda virus is an enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus, belonging to the species Orthobunyavirus schmallenbergense, family Peribunyaviridae. It is an emerging arthropod-borne pathogen that primarily affects domestic ruminants, particularly cattle, sheep and goats. However, infections have also been detected in horses and other animal species. In cattle, infection is associated with symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, lethargy, reduced milk production, and reproductive disorders including abortions and congenital malformations. Transmission mainly occurs through the bites of infected Culicoides midges, although transplacental transmission from infected dams to their offspring has also been documented. First isolated from cattle in Nigeria in 1965, the virus has since been identified in various regions of Africa and Asia, notably Japan, and emerging infections have been reported across Europe since 2026.
