The Stx2-Ecoli dtec-qPCR comprises a series of species-specific targeted reagents designed for Shiga toxin 2 Escherichia coli detection by using qPCR. Shiga toxin is a family of related toxins with two major groups, Stx1 and Stx2. The most common sources for Shiga toxin are the bacteria Shigella dysenteriae and the shigatoxigenic group of Escherichia coli (STEC), which includes serotypes O157:H7, O104:H4, and other enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). Shiga toxins have many names, which can be used interchangeably (shiga toxins, shiga-like toxins, cytotoxins, verocytotoxins, verotoxins). STEC live in the guts of ruminant animals, including cattle, goats, sheep, deer, and elk. The major source for human illnesses is cattle, where STEC generally do not make animals to become sick. The symptoms of STEC infections often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Most patients recover within 10 days, but in young children and the elderly, the infection may lead to a life-threatening disease, such as haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Haemolytic uraemic syndrome is characterized by acute renal failure, haemolytic anaemia and thrombocytopenia. Stx-2 has been found to be about 400 times more toxic than Stx-1.
