Streptococcus equi subsp. equi
Description
The StrEquEqu dtec-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Streptococcus equi subsp. equi detection by using qPCR. Streptococcus equi subsp. equi is a Gram-positive bacterium capable of lysing red blood cells belonging to the Streptococcaceae family. S. equi subsp. equi affects horses mainly, causing a disease denominated “strangles” that produces enlarged lymph nodes which can obstruct the airway and cause suffocation. It is also capable of infecting humans with a suppressed immune system following close contact with horses. Infections with this pathogen are associated with high mortality and poor neurological outcome in human survivors.
