Theileria spp.

Description

The TheSpp qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Theileria spp. detection by using qPCR. Theileria is a genus of protozoan parasites belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa and the family Theileriidae. These intracellular organisms have a complex life cycle involving both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts and are primarily transmitted by ixodid ticks. Theileria species infect a variety of domestic and wild ruminants, with cattle and small ruminants acting as primary hosts. Infections can lead to theileriosis, a disease characterised by fever, lymphadenopathy, anaemia, and, in severe cases, death. The clinical manifestations of the disease vary depending on the species involved. Theileria parva and Theileria annulata are among the most pathogenic species, causing East Coast fever and tropical theileriosis, respectively. Theileriosis is widespread across Africa, Asia and parts of Europe, posing a significant economic threat to the livestock industries in endemic regions. Due to sequence similarity, amplification with closely related Babesia species cannot be excluded.
