Usutu virus
Description
The USUV RT-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Usutu virus detection by using qPCR. Usutu virus is an enveloped virus with a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome, that belongs to the family Flaviviridae, genus Orthoflavivirus. It primarily infects birds, which act as the main reservoir hosts, but it can also infect humans and other mammals. In humans, infection is often asymptomatic, but it can occasionally lead to symptoms such as fever and rash. In rare cases, it can cause neurological complications, including encephalitis or meningoencephalitis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. The virus is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly species of the genus Culex. Its distribution is growing across Africa and Europe, where it has been associated with significant bird mortality events and emerging public health concerns.
