West Nile virus
Description
The WNV dtec-RT-qPCR comprises a series of species-specific targeted reagents designed for West Nile virus detectionby using qPCR. West Nile virus is a positive-sense, single stranded RNA, zoonotic arbovirus belonging to the genus Flavivirus in the family Flaviridae. Because the main mode of transmission is via various species of mosquitoes, which are the prime vector, birds are the most commonly infected animal, therefore, they serve as the prime reservoir host. Humans, horses and also other mammals can be infected. In fact, approximately 80% of West Nile virus infections in humans are subclinical, with no clinical symptoms detected. On the other hand, in clinical cases, termed West Nile fever, the symptoms may include fever, headaches, fatigue, myalgia, malaise, nausea, anorexia, vomiting and rash. However, less than 1% of the cases are severe and result in neurological disease when the central nervous system is affected.
