The CPV2/FPLV epPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for detection of Canine parvovirus type 2 and Feline parvovirus by using epPCR. Canine parvovirus type 2 and Feline parvovirus (also known as Feline panleukopenia virus) are a closely related non-segmented single-stranded DNA viruses from the family Parvoviridae. Differences between both species are minimal (98 % genome similitude), but taxonomic nomenclature is based in the host from which they are isolated. In fact, the most widely accepted hypothesis is that the recent emergence of CPV2 is from a variant of FPLV when infecting another carnivore, such as mink or foxes. For this reason CPV2, FPLV and Mink enteritis virus nomenclature must be revised to reflect their genomic resemblance. This qPCR kit may also detect Mink enteritis virus. In both cases, FPLV and CPV2, interspecies transmission readily occurs among carnivores. Transmission is though contact with infected animal’s body fluids (usually feces) and is extremely virulent and contagious. Once contracted, the signs are similar leading to lethargy, bloody diarrhea, dehydratation and often death. Secondary infections can occur due to a decrease in the white blood cells, thus compromising the immune system.
