The FMDV RT-epPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Foot-and-Mouth disease virus detection by using RT-epPCR. Foot-and-Mouth disease or Hoof-and-Mouth disease (Aphthae epizooticae) is an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease. It affects cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic and wild animals. Foot-and-Mouth disease is highly infectious. It can be spread by infected animals through aerosols, through contact with contaminated farming equipment, vehicles, clothing or feed, and by domestic and wild predators. FMD disease is caused by a picornavirus, a non-enveloped, positive-stranded RNA virus with an icosahedral capsid and genetically highly variable, which limits the effectiveness of vaccination. The genome RNA is unusual because it has a protein on the 5′ end that is used as a primer for transcription by the RNA polymerase. Of the seven described serotypes of this virus, A, C, O, Asia 1 and SAT3 appear to be distinct lineages; SAT 1 and SAT 2 are unresolved clades.
