Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli O157:H7
Description
The SalSpp&ECO157 qPCR Duplex comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli O157:H7 detection by using multiplexed qPCR. Foodborne bacterial pathogens are a major cause of gastrointestinal disease worldwide and are commonly transmitted through contaminated food, water or contact with infected animals. Salmonella species are rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae that infect a wide range of cold- and warm-blooded hosts and can cause salmonellosis, typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever. Clinical manifestations commonly include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting, although invasive disease may occur in severe cases. Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an enterohaemorrhagic E. coli strain that can cause haemorrhagic colitis and, in severe cases, haemolytic uraemic syndrome, particularly in children and older adults. Cattle are its principal reservoir, and pathogenicity is mainly associated with the production of Shiga toxins. Transmission of both pathogens occurs primarily through the faecal-oral route via contaminated or undercooked food, unpasteurised products, water, fresh produce or direct contact with infected animals or individuals. Both are distributed worldwide and represent important food safety and public health concerns.
