Macrorhabdus ornithogaster

Description

The MacOrn dtec-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Macrorhabdus ornithogaster detection by using qPCR. Macrorhabdus ornithogaster, also known as avian gastric yeast, is an anamorphic Ascomycota yeast which can infect many species of birds worldwide. The fungus affects a wide range of bird species, from budgerigars to ostriches. There are different opinions on whether M. ornithogaster can cause disease. In fact, it was detected in its hosts both with and without obvious clinical signs. Affected birds typically lose weight and die from malnourishment related complications, although in some cases death can be more sudden as a result of vomiting or choking. Microscopic diagnosis is still challenging because the organism itself can vary in size and may be present in straight forms or occasionally branching.
