Staphylococcus epidermidis
Description
The StaEpi dtec-qPCR comprises a series of species-specific targeted reagents designed for Staphylococcus epidermidis detection by using qPCR. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a Gram-positive bacterium belonging to the Staphylococcaceae family. It is part of the normal human flora, typically the skin flora, and less commonly the mucosal flora. Previously only regarded as an innocuous commensal microorganism on the human skin, S. epidermidis is nowadays seen as an important opportunistic pathogen, being the most frequent cause of nosocomial infections. S. epidermidis is capable of growing and form biofilms in catheters or other surgical implants, producing infections difficult to treat with antibiotics. As biofilms are intrinsically resistant to antibiotics, biofilm-associated infections are a notorious burden on the increased duration of hospital admissions, medical resources and healthcare costs. The most vulnerable patients are immune-compromised and premature neonates.
