Streptococcus suis

Description

The StrSui dtec-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Streptococcus suis  detection by using qPCR. Streptococcus suis is a Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile bacterium that belongs to the Streptococcus genus. This organism colonizes the upper respiratory tract in pigs during parturition, being part of the natural microbiome of tonsils and gastrointestinal tract. Nevertheless, infection with certain strains of S. suis result in swine streptococcosis, which is characterised by meningitis, septicaemia, endocarditis, arthritis and pneumonia. Transmission usually occurs by mixing healthy carrier pigs with uninfected individuals. This bacterium is present anywhere in the world, but most strains from Asia and Europe are highly virulent and can spread systematically throughout the animal. S. suis can also infect humans when handling infected pig products, especially if there are exposed cuts and abrasions.
