Shigella spp.
Description
The ShiSpp dtec-qPCR comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Shigella spp. detection by using qPCR. Shigella is a genus of Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-spore forming, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria genetically closely related to E. coli. Shigella is the causative agent of human shigellosis, affecting primates, but not in other mammals. It is only naturally found in humans and gorillas. During infection, it typically causes dysentery. Shigella is one of the leading bacterial causes of diarrhoea worldwide. The number of deaths it causes each year is estimated at between 74.000 and 600.000 deaths and it is in the top four pathogens causing moderate-to-severe diarrhoea in African and South Asian children.
